LtCol Shin was raised in Michigan and commissioned in 2009 as a Marine second lieutenant. Upon graduation from The Basic School, LtCol Shin was assigned the MOS 0206 Signals Intelligence / Ground Electronic Warfare Officer and conducted training at the Navy – Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center in Dam Neck, Virginia. He was subsequently assigned to 3d Radio Battalion at Marine Corps Base Hawaii – Kaneohe Bay.
LtCol Shin was assigned to 3d Radio Battalion from 2010 to 2014, and served as a platoon commander, detachment assistant officer in charge, current operations officer, company executive officer, and company commander. During this tour, he deployed to South Korea, deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and was promoted to the rank of captain.
LtCol Shin was assigned to 3d Reconnaissance Battalion in Okinawa, Japan from 2014 to 2018, and served as S-2, Force Reconnaissance Company, III Marine Expeditionary Force, S-2, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, and Headquarters and Service Company Commander. During this tour, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq with the Commander’s Initiative Group, Combined Joint Task Force – Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.
In 2018, LtCol Shin received orders to attend the Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduation in 2019 and promotion to major, Major Shin was assigned to 3d Radio Battalion, where he served as a company commander and battalion operations officer. During this tour, he completed the Marine Air Ground Task Force Intelligence Officer Course at Dam Neck, Virginia.
In 2022, LtCol Shin executed orders to attend Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Quantico, Virginia for academic year 2023. Following graduation and promotion to lieutenant colonel, LtCol Shin was assigned to U.S. Forces Japan in 2025.
